Research

Knowledge for building where it is hardest.

Every project leaves a question behind. The research takes those questions further, so that what is learnt in one fragile place can serve another.

Coastal resilience

Maryland Sea Grant · 2024

With Maryland Sea Grant and graduate students at Kendall College of Art and Design, Ferris State University, I ran a pilot design studio on coastal resilience in Cambridge, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It explored the relationship between architecture, culture and urban form, with a seminar series and an exhibition, and became Maryland Sea Grant’s proof of concept for a recurring coastal design programme serving Maryland’s communities.

Policy and guidance

Ongoing

Design guidance for governments, agencies and NGOs working on reconstruction, emergency and climate programmes, at every scale from the shelter to the neighbourhood. In progress: an expanded version of the UN guidelines for architecture in states of emergency.

03

FragilityLab

2023 · now closed

A research platform I co-founded on architecture in fragile contexts. Its questions continue in this practice: how buildings, settlements and public space can be designed where climate, conflict and scarcity shape daily life.
